Hi there,

will be on Kalymnos once again, looking for climbing partner.

Will arrive on April 5th and leave on the 29th. Anyone fancy climbing with me? Would like to onsight some more stuff in the 7th grade, maybe also do some projects. Sector choice doesn't matter too much then - as long as it's not too slabby ;)

I'm 35YO, coming from Germany. Contact me at jochen_b1@gmx.de

Cheers
nikofot on "8a.nu volume down"

Regarding the new madness with the 8a.nu rankings, i believe that climbkalymnos.com should not advocate them so much because their scope is somewhat outside rock climbing.

First of all, the truth is that in order to be a (young) top climber the most important factor is to be rich enough so that you can devote all of your time climbing and consequently what the 8a.nu rankings actually show is not so much talent but rather ability to spend 100% of your time climbing. I know a lot of people with talent who can afford to go to a crag 1-2 times per week and maybe another 2-3 times to the gym (but usually tired after work). Those people are permanently stuck at the 6a-6b grades. On the other hand, some big names who managed to reach 7b "quickly" were those with the luxury (and commitment) to do nothing else but climbing. So "in order to climb 8a, you
must be wealthy" is the motto.

Secondly as mammals, humans for million years used climbing to survive from predators and in that sense climbing was about "not falling". Now, falling is acceptable with the proper gear but when one does 100 attempts to "free" a route this kind of loses the essence of climbing and instead displays a factor of "commitment" and "desire to be on the top". When you see a video of Alain Robert free soloing a 7b multi-pitch you are watching true climbing which also requires strength preservation because getting pumped equals death. On the other hand, when you see someone like Sharma freeing a route after 50 attempts, that looks more like circus: the climber has been killed 50 times before completing the stunt.

Thirdly, the route grades are highly subjective depending on the size of the climbers body. A route that is 6a may seem as 6b+ to one who is too short or too tall, and we all know that. When however it comes to routes above 8c grade this subjectiveness makes any kind of comparison pointless. When one frees a 9a, that route might seem as 9b+, or in other words impossible to a climber of different size. In fact, the main reason for the existence of the grades is to "know what to expect more or less" and not something to brag about doing.

Finally, there are many good climbers (we all know some) who because they do not believe in what 8a.nu does, do not post their progress there and I believe climbkalymnos.com should respect their decision by not placing so much emphasis on those rankings. It gives a false perception about who are the best.

The counter-argument seems to be "you can't do it, that's why you say 8a.nu is crap". Whatever...

Rock climbers are hungry for information about climbing from the internet, on their rest days but because usually there is not much "to talk about", this is why 8a.nu is popular. You can get an overdose of information, statistics and comparisons that are about climbing which you love so much and think about all the time, and then go to sleep motivated. Even though those statistics do not actually mean anything.

I believe however climbkalymnos.com should rise above that, be more serious and be a website that represents the entire climbing community equally, accepting that there are many (majority?) great rock climbers who are not interested in 8a.nu rankings because they believe that this is not at all what rock climbing is about. It's perfectly OK to reference 8a.nu but make climbkalymnos.com a place of wisdom which does not mislead people to inappropriate goals and knows the true spirit of rock climbing.

Let the flamewar begin! :)

Ryanair had stopped their route Frankfurt/Hahn to Kos for this winter schedule. There were rumours that they were not going to start them again for next summer.
Actually they do! From end of March 2012 they start again twice a week. Prices are a bit up but still a budget opportunity compared to regular flights!

Hi Kameleon, sorry about late reply. If you are still on the island and it rains, most caves stay dry --Grande Grotta is good, Three Caves (Telendos) is even better (see page 27 of the guidebook). Just make sure you don't climb if there is a thunderstorm.

Hi Mick,
There are about 10 new routes at this wall, but as they are brand new we don't have the info yet. As soon as the equippers complete their work and send us info we will publish the routes on our route updates list. This is an excellent wall to climb in summer months, by the way, as it is northwest-facing and stays in the shadow for long.

Hi Nick,

It's hard to find any reliable information on the fauna of Kalymnos - there isn't much on the internet and we don't know of any local resource we can draw upon. That said, the snake could be a Kalymnos melanistic whip snake (an endemic sub-species found on Kalymnos), a European cat snake, a dwarf snake or a rock viper. This information comes from various sources on the internet and we can't vouch for its reliability. The same goes for the wasps / hornets. Here are some links in English (though both pertain to nearby islands, not Kalymnos):

http://www.lacerta.de/AS/Bibliografie/BIB_5325.pdf
http://australianherpetology.com/kos%20reptiles.htm

We make every effort to include useful information in the guidebook based on what climbers have asked -- sorry to hear you found it irrelevant. We'll look into adding some reliable flora / fauna information in a future edition.

Hi,

Last week a friend of mine saw a snake in the Jurassic park sector.
She described it as being 40cm long almost white on one side and dark on the other. It could lift up its head from the ground about 10cm.
Then I had a look in the topo, found a lot of info I do not need but nothing about the snakes on the Island.
Does someone know what kind of snake can be found there ?
I also want to ask about the huge bees/wasps we can see there. Same situation = nothing in the topo. Are they dangerous ?
Cheers
Nick

On the right side of Pothia there is the place where every night they make a huge fire and burn the garbage, all the things people throw away in their trash from plastic bottles to chemicals. We passed through that road with a car. An entire hill side smells burnt plastic and shit. We couldn't stand the air and meantime there were normally goats on that hill and possibly many other living things. Not to mention that all this ends up in the sea...

This is a shame for kalymnos.

I agree, Kalymnos is paradise but this issue should be addressed.
I also heard it from the locals, they love climbers, but the one thing not appreciated about the influx of visitors is the scooter traffic, noise and pollution.
Electric bikes? Do people really need to rent scooters to drive from Massouri to the Odyssey parking? I was pretty shocked at this.
Hoping to hear more thoughts to get a discussion going, especially from those living and working in Kalymnos.

Hi Aris,

First of all, many thanks for all the hard work you put in maintaining the routes on Kalymnos. We're just back from our third trip, and are already planning the next one.

Just a quick note to let you know that Zymoto at Skalia Pillar is missing a hangar and maillon from the first lower-off (6a to this point). The route has an extension at 6b with a karabiner lower-off, so we were able to use that.

Thanks,

Em.

Sector Spartacus

- Magnetus
Second last hanger and nut was missing. We found and replaced the nut and placed an Aussie removable bracket so it can still be climbed in the interim until a proper permanent fixed hanger can be placed and tightened.

The route is too overhanging and traversing to abseil easyly...But you can return to the village quickely if you take the "Fast way" describe on my web-site once you will be on the top...

Surely the company need to understand that a lot of people are visiting kalymnos in the months of September and October and simply be prepared to put on more boats - or use the bigger one that was sitting there unused. A boat every two hours would not be unreasonable. As for the kamikazi boat - I agree to not miss your flight is important, but having taken this boat, I was convinced I would miss my flight because I and the boat were at the bottom of the ocean. A truly terrifying experience. And an expensive one!

Simon,

thank you for your most prompt reply. Could you please let me know why it is not possible to abseil down from above the second pitch? Would it be possible to abseil down from higher up if I would have a few maillon rapide in my back pocket?

Thanks

Hi Michael,

The route follows the left side of the biggest arch you can see to the right of the Crescendo Cave and the route "Wings for life". You can see this arch on the way to Princess Canyon, it's obvious, you can't miss it.

The path is following the bottom of the south face of Telendos, above the one going to Princess Canyon.

I've put some yellow marks to show the way and the path is quite good all along. (Only a short passage on the scree, about 20m...)

You can't abseil down after the second pitch, so it's good to be sure to have the level to get out of the route from the top. I've equipped it very close, the obligatory level if you climb from bolts to bolts is 6c+...

Since it's a new route, the 3rd pitch on stalactites is still a little dirty, (Wich is normal with all the new routes...) but I've cleaned it the most I could...

Well, I hope you will enjoy it, let me know if you go!

Hi

I wonder if someone could please give me some further directions to the route Inspiration on Telendos south face. The post on this website as well as the one on http://www.kalymnosclimbingguide.com has been read, but I am still not sure I will find the right path to the start of the climb. I would very much appreciate if someone could give me some more detailed descriptions, such as where this route is in relation to other routes on that face, preferably routes which are in the guide book.

Is the route equipped with anchors so that you can abseil down?

Thanks

Michael
